IMPORTANT DETAILS REGARDING FIRST TIME REGISTRATION:

  • Academy for Lifelong Learning membership is optional, but encouraged, because as a member you receive special member rates and benefits. Read below to find out more.

  • If this is your first time visiting our registration system, you will need to create an account before you can register.

  • Before you select a class or excursion you must FIRST COMPLETE the purchase of your membership IF you want to be shown member rates.  How to purchase a membership is outlined below in red.

  • Once you have created an account and purchased a membership, you simply sign-in to the website on future visits to add courses and excursions to your cart at member rates.

A.L.L. OVERVIEW
  • The Academy for Lifelong Learning offers a wide-ranging selection of academic and cultural programs – without homework, tests or credit. Founded on the belief that “A Curious Mind Never Retires,” A.L.L. is full of opportunities for everyone in the community to learn and grow intellectually, if not spiritually.

  • A.L.L. is 100% member driven, supported by membership dues and program fees. Policy is set by a volunteer Board of Directors elected from the membership and programs are coordinated by A.L.L. volunteers and include traditional liberal arts and sciences topics.

  • Programs are open to all interested adults, regardless of age or educational background.

  • Membership is not required to participate, although memberships allow for special rates.  Read more below.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN A.L.L.
  • Short, college-level courses (1-6 weeks) and educational excursions led by Western faculty and faculty emeriti, as well as experts in various fields and professions who compel learner exploration and discovery to stimulate unique thought, discussion and an exchange of knowledge.

  • Content is produced by volunteers who plan courses, excursions and cultural events.

  • Wide breadth of courses offer a chance to learn about a new and unfamiliar subjects.

  • Course structures offer flexibility and convenience with no ties to a structured quarter system.

  • Explore local and regional sites through planned group excursions.

  • Continue learning and broaden understanding of the world around.

  • Engage with spirited adults who seek intellectual and social enrichment, as well as organized events and socials.

MEMBERSHIPS

MEMBERSHIP OVERVIEW

  • A membership to A.L.L. provides program participants with a variety of discounts and privileges on programs, WWU events and facilities and at Village Books. Find out more in the benefits section below.

  • Price: $50 per person, per year (valid until June 30, 2024)

  • Receive a 25% discount on fees for courses

  • Why a membership? Memberships support a majority of the administrative activities necessary to run A.L.L. effectively. Not only does membership afford great benefits, but also provides an important source of revenue for the organization and, further, shows your support regardless of the number of programs in which you choose to participate.

MEMBERSHIP PURCHASE & RENEWAL

  • PLEASE NOTE: Your membership must be paid for prior to receiving member prices on A.L.L. programs. Otherwise, you will be shown the non-member rates offered to the general public, even if the “membership” is added to your cart.

  • How to purchase/renew: You can purchase a membership by signing in and clicking on MY ACCOUNT in the upper right corner above your account name and selecting MY MEMBERSHIPS from the submenu.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS

  • 25% discount on fees for courses with membership (membership must be purchased first, discount will be automatically applied).

  • Participation in complimentary, self-directed Interest Groups such as our Contemporary Readings Discussion Group, History Discussion Group and World Affairs Discussion Group.

  • Borrowing privileges at Western's library.

  • Discounted student rates at university events, including some performing arts performances. (Free tickets not available.)

  • Invitations to special membership and social events.

  • Alumni privileges at Lakewood Boathouse (on Lake Whatcom) and Viking Union Outdoor Center.

  • Use of the Wade King Recreation Center at alumni and affiliates rates. Included in this benefit is use of the pool from Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 10 a.m., and Saturday - Sunday, full access all day beginning July 1, 2023.

  • 10% discount at Village Books.

  • First month free of annual Cascadia Daily subscription.
